In February I was laid off from my company. After 25 years as a senior executive with fortune 100 companies, I was thrown into immediate insecurity in this “perfect storm” of economic uncertainty. After sending out hundreds of resumes in an endless search for new employment, I realized that sometimes you have to take control of your own future. The way America does business is changing, and we have to change with it.
My objective was to find something where I was helping people. I used to be VP of Development for Kool Smiles, a company in California that built and operated dental clinics for underprivileged children. After searching for an answer, I discovered this incredible company and this amazing product that it absolutely blew me away.
When I first heard about this electronic cigarette, I didn’t believe it either. But, after several weeks of research and talking to executives, smokers, non-smokers, and doctors, I was convinced. Then, after giving one to my sister who smoked for 47 years, and watching her change completely, I realized that not only could this be a career to make me very wealthy…..and without all the pitfalls of working for a company….but it really would help people. That’s a home Run!
And then came the coffee! My nickname and personal e-mail is “espressogrin”. So, you know I love coffee. And our new Journey coffee is incredible. If you want to know what I think about it, join us each week on one of the Business Venture presentations.
And, while the products themselves are amazing, I had an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of this start-up company. I feel like one of those first employees that began with a small technology company before they named it Microsoft! For me, the timing of this new discovery and opportunity couldn’t have been more perfect.
Having been in construction and real estate most of my career, my first thought was, “I have no experience in this”. But I quickly found how simple and rewarding it was. In these challenging economic times we have to sometimes reinvent ourselves. Now, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Rarely does an opportunity with such impact and potential land in your lap like this.
